Dashboards

5X Managed Apache Superset™ lets you assemble charts on your workspace using Dashboards to build end-to-end data visualization experiences for your business needs. You can integrate multiple charts into a unified view to build comprehensive and contextual data visualization. Dashboards are interactive, provide real-time data updates, and can be customized for data exploration. You can collaborate with the team using metrics to customize its CSS styling and apply tags .

This guide explains how you can explore Dashboards on your 5X Managed Apache Superset™ workspace for data analysis and visualization.

Prerequisite

Dashboards overview

Navigate to Dashboards on 5X Managed Apache Superset™ from 5X Operate. The key components are:

  • You can perform bulk operations, add and import charts from the header.

  • The overview lists the dahsboards on your workspace. Here, you can sort, filter and perform actions on the current charts.

Actions

You can delete, export and edit the chart from Actions on the overview. In the tabular view, select the three-dot dropdown menu next to the chart. If viewing by list, hover over the Action column of the chart to access the options.

  • Delete the chart by selecting the Delete icon and confirming. This action cannot be undone.

  • Export the dashboard as needed. The export file contains the dashboards in .yaml and its metadata.yaml in .zip format.

  • Edit the dashboard properties by selecting the Edit icon and Save. Dashboard properties include:

    • Basic information like the name and URL SLUG (the readable URL for the dashboard.)

    • Access: list of users who can alter the dashboard.

    • Colors: The color scheme from the list of preloaded options:

    • Certification: The certification description and owner details.

    • Tags: apply the list of tags to the dashboard.

    • Advanced: JSON metadata to customize and alter parameters as required. This JSON object is generated dynamically when clicking the save or overwrite button in the dashboard view.

Bulk Select & Import

You can bulk-select dashboards to perform actions and import dashboards from the header. Click Bulk Select on the right of the header to add tags, export and delete multiple dashboards at once. Select Add Tag to add saved tags to the select dashboards. You can create tags from Settings. Click the Import button to import your dashboard files (.yaml)

Deleting a dashboard is permanent and cannot be undone.

Add Dashboard

5X Managed Apache Superset™ supports a dashboard playground to configure, add and build your dashboard. The charts available to add to your dashboard appear on the Charts tab on the right. Along with Charts, you can configure the dashboard’s layout elements from the Layout Elements tab. Drag and drop the components from both tabs to build your dashboard.

You can work on the dashboard in draft and publish once it is created and you have added the collection of slices (charts.)

You can create a new dashboard by,

  1. Configuring the chart configuration, and

  2. Configuring the dashboard layout elements.

Prerequisite

  • Must have a chart created on your workspace.

Steps

1. Add dashboard

Select + Dashboard on the top-right of the Dashboards page.

3. Chart configuration

The charts that you have access to are listed on the Charts tab to the right. You can filter charts from the search bar and sort by recently updated, name, datasets and vizualition type. Select Show only my charts to filter charts that you own. Drag and drop the charts you need to add to the dashboard. You can add up to three charts per row. You can add up to three charts in a row on the dashboard. To customize the layout, configure the layout elements.

Reminder: Save your updates when you work on draft dashboards. You can always click the Edit Dashboard button to start working on it.

3. Layout elements

The dashboard layouts can be customized from the Layout Elements tab.

  • Tabs: Section graphs by tabs to show up to three charts in each tab. Click the + Add to add a tab and x Delete to remove a tab.

  • Rows: Serves as a container to group and organize multiple elements horizontally within a dashboard

  • Columns: It divides the horizontal space into sections for placing different elements side by side.

  • Header: Add headers to your dashboard visual to section off and label groups of content within a dashboard.

  • Text: Add descriptive text, annotations, or explanations directly onto the dashboard.

  • Divider: Use dividers to add visual separators between different sections or groups of content within a dashboard.

4. Dashboard playground

The dashboard playground on the right helps you customize your charts and elements within the dashboard. Here, you can hover over a chart or a layout element to perform element-level actions like delete and row-level actions. You can undo and redo actions when working on the draft dashboard.

  • Click on the Move icon to move the layout by row or column view.

  • Click the Settings icon to update the layout element’s background.

  • Click the Delete icon to delete the layout element.

5. Save and add filters

Once you have updated the dashboard, Save the draft from the header. Before publishing you can add global filters and apply them to the dashboard.

Filters enhance the dashboard interactivity and usability to let users customize their data views and navigate the content more effectively. You can set global filters to the dashboard and apply them to run once saved. Expand the Filters panel on the left of the saved dashboard.

Click +ADD/EDIT FILTERS to configure the filters and dividers. The Setting tab lets you configure the filter details and settings. Filters can be scoped to apply to all panels on the dashboard or only to selected panels from the Scoping tab.

  1. Click Add filters and dividers on the left of the Add and edit filters pop-up to add another filter layer.

  2. On the Settings tab, configure filter properties such as type, name, dataset and column association, settings for sorting and filtering values.

  3. Click Scoping to configure how you want the filters to be applied to your dashboard panels. You can apply to all or selected filters.

6. Dashboard options

Click the three-dot menu on the saved dashboard header to interact with the dashboard and files.

  • Click Refresh dashboard to update the latest changes to the panels and charts.

  • Enter fullscreen as needed.

  • Click Save as to save a copy of the dashboard or overwrite it.

  • Click Download to export the dashboard in PDF or PNG format.

  • Click Share to copy the permalink and share it by email.

  • Click Embed dashboard to embed to external web applications by entering the allowed domains. (E.g., superset.example.com, superset.demo.com)

  • Set the auto-refresh interval to configure the refresh frequency and Save for this session. You can set up a refresh frequency of up to six-hour intervals. The dashboard will be updated in the interval selected.

You can also access the actions in draft mode. Some additional options are:

  • Edit properties: Update the dashboard properties.

  • Edit CSS: Apply a custom CSS template to the dashboard from saved CSS templates on the workspace.

7. Publish dashboard

To publish the dashboard, click on the Draft button next to the dashboard name. You can mark the dashboard favorite for easy access.
